Victory in the Pacific Day – 15 August

Victory in the Pacific Day, commemorated on 15 August each year, marks the end of the Second World War for Australia. On 15 August 1945, Japan accepted the Allied demand for unconditional surrender, bringing to an end almost six years of global conflict and more than three years of war in the Pacific. For Australians, the announcement brought enormous relief and celebration, but also a profound awareness of the sacrifices made by those who had served.

More than one million Australians served during the Second World War, with Australian servicemen and women involved in campaigns across Europe, North Africa, the Mediterranean, Asia and the Pacific. The Pacific War brought the conflict particularly close to Australia, including the bombing of Darwin, attacks on Sydney Harbour, fighting in Papua and New Guinea, and the experiences of thousands of Australians held as prisoners of war. More than 39,000 Australians died during the war, and many more returned home carrying the physical and emotional consequences of their service.

Victory in the Pacific Day is therefore more than a commemoration of military victory. It is an opportunity to remember those who did not return, to acknowledge the service and sacrifice of all who contributed to the war effort, and to reflect upon the experiences of veterans, their families and the Australian community. As the generation that experienced the Second World War passes from living memory, preserving their stories and understanding what they endured becomes increasingly important.
